Believers and Non-Believers in Fandom

Postby pickypenelope » Tue Sep 09, 2014 5:40 pm

Christians, Jews, and Pagans! Oh my! Fandom is stereotypically seen as fairly monolithic when it comes to religious (or anti-religious) beliefs, but the truth is that a vast diversity exists. Atheists, Wiccans, Agnostics, and Theists of all stripes are represented within fandom, and specifically in the Arisia community, yet there is often veiled suspicion if not outright hostility toward beliefs that we don't share ourselves. How can we be open about our own beliefs while valuing and respecting the conflicting beliefs of others? Is this even a worthy goal?
