The Mental Illness Stigma

Postby NoBoundariesIPM » Fri Jul 26, 2013 9:07 pm

Mood changes=bipolar
Depression can be cured with a smile
Psychopath=psychotic
It's all a big conspiracy
OMG, just be happy!

This is just some of the stigma attached to mental illness.

Let's debunk these myths, and talk about how fandom has helped deal with it.

I like this idea a lot. Fandom has always been a haven for people who didn't "fit in", and there always has been quite a few folks in our community dealing with anxiety, depression, and various learning disabilities (I've fit into all of those categories at one time or another...)

Maybe we could discuss some times when our shows/books/games/etc. Got It Right, and times when they Didn't Get It Right... (is "Psych-Fail" a thing? It darn well should be...) How does Fandom help us cope? etc.

Would like to be on this panel. My position as president of CT's Eastern Regional Mental Health Board gives me a unique perspective on the topic.
