Using Games to Tell Stories

Postby awexelblat » Wed Jul 15, 2015 3:19 pm

For two years I've run a very successful storytelling-in-gaming panel. Year 1 was about computer games; last year we did tabletop. This year I'd like to try something different, talking about the deliberate use of a game to tell a story. The examples of this that I"m most familiar with are in the computer genre: the Tales from the Fringe series, Her Story, and the solo campaign for things like Starcraft. In all these cases, a story is told with the player as narrative participant/shaper but the game author is definitely the storyteller. What are the pros and cons of this kind of "on rails" game experience? Is it even a game anymore? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
