The Idiot Plot

Postby MichaelMcAfee » Fri Jun 19, 2015 2:51 pm

A plot that depends on everyone making bad decisions for it to proceed was called an Idiot Plot by James Blish (and was later popularized by Roger Ebert in his film reviews). Often, an idiot plot offends the reader's intelligence and causes book flinging. Yet in reality, people often do stupid things for no good reason (sometimes for the sole purpose of making things tough for other people). Also, if done well, an idiot plot can make an entertaining point about the characters or the world they live in. How do the panelists balance all these factors when writing?
