Retrospective: Cordwainer Smith

Postby PMaranci » Fri Aug 21, 2015 8:58 pm

Fifty years ago, one of the most innovative writers in science fiction left us: Cordwainer Smith, otherwise known as Paul Linebarger. His influence on the field was substantial, but his works are largely forgotten now. Our panelists will discuss him and his unique contribution to science fiction.

I don't think his works are exactly forgotten -- there was a publication of a collection of his works in paperback only a few years ago, and NESFA has brought out the ultimate Norstrilia, a volume of the rest of Smith's work, and a concordance of his works in the past decade or so. Also, I strongly suspect that the Wachowski's movie Jupiter Ascending was strongly influenced by Smith (although not one reviewer seems to know this -- but you've got The Young Person Who Owns the Earth, the Drug that Restores Youth and gives Long Life, the Animal-derived Underpeople. How can you doubt it?)
