Box Office Bombs (that are better than you've heard)

Postby sydtol1 » Sun Sep 07, 2014 9:33 pm

Every year, it seems like there's a film that comes out to enormous hype and tanks something awful. Conventional wisdom then steps in and asserts that the reason these movies failed at the box office is because they were, of course, terrible. However, sometimes that's not the case. Perhaps the studio overspent, or promotion was lacking, or the stars failed to align and a worthy (or worthy-ish) film just wasn't successful. Many audience members thought John Carter was a lot of fun. Hugo is one of the most personal and charming films Scorsese ever created. And it has been scientifically proven that if a movie featuring The Lone Ranger riding Silver on traincars with "The William Tell Overture" blaring in the background does nothing for you, there is probably something wrong with you.

What movies do you feel deserve a better reputation, despite their not having been financially successful?

The Rocketeer is great! I mean, it came out when I was 12, so I was *exactly* the right age for that flick, but... yeah. Fond memories.

Hi, all,

I, for one, would love to see this panel go forward in 2016.

Thanks,

Danny
